Washington, D.C.—The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse has announced that three national organizations and a major insurance company have pledged over $100,000 to support the new facility during 1999.
The pledges were made at a meeting of the Clearinghouse Board of Advisors convened by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) November 13 in Washington, D.C.
The Clearinghouse, which operates out of the Texas Transportation Institute in College Station, Texas, is a year-old venture between FHWA and ARTBA to improve safety in road construction work sites.
The facility provides transportation agencies, law enforcement departments, highway designers and contractors, labor unions, public safety officials, manufacturers and suppliers of traffic control suppliers, researchers, utility companies, insurance companies, motor clubs and other interested parties with a wealth of information on how to make road construction zones safer for motorists, pedestrians and highway workers.
The project was initiated to help reduce the 700 deaths and 37,000 injuries that occur in road construction sites each year.
The following organizations have pledged to financially support Clearinghouse operations during 1999:
- The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials pledged up to $50,000;
- The Laborers International Union of North America committed $25,000;
- CNA Commercial Insurance will provide $10,000; and
- ARTBA will contribute a minimum of $25,000.
Additional resources will be needed to fully sustain the facility. For tax-deductible sponsorship information, contact ARTBA at 202-289-4434.
