Washington, D.C.— A public relations program mounted by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to promote safety in roadway construction zones has been named a 1999 Gold Circle Award recipient by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). The Gold Circle Award recognizes ARTBA activities to create industry awareness and use of the new National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse is a joint partnership of the FHWA and ARTBA aimed at reducing the more than 700 deaths and 37,000 injuries that occur in roadway construction work zones each year.

The Clearinghouse project, managed by ARTBA and based at the Texas Transportation Institute, is handling more than 1,200 requests a month for information about safety in roadway construction zones. Users can access Clearinghouse services on the Internet at http://wzsafety.tamu.edu., via toll-free phone (1-888-447-5556) or by fax (409-845-0568).

The Clearinghouse also maintains a Board of Advisors, consisting of corporate and organization leaders interested in highway safety, to provide oversight and guidance to FHWA and ARTBA on the operations of the Clearinghouse. The Board is charged with helping develop long-term financial support for the project. Board members include:
