Washington, D.C. – As the busy construction season gets underway, roadway workers and motorists run an increased risk of having an accident in roadway construction zones. In 1998, more than 770 people were killed and 39,000 were injured in accidents at these sites. To provide motorists, workers, transportation officials and others information to help prevent these incidents, the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse offers its extensive library and research services free of charge.

At http://wzsafety.tamu.edu, users will find the world’s most extensive "cyberlibrary" on work zone safety topics. Easy menus and search tools make navigating the site simple, even for inexperienced Internet users. For those who don’t have Internet access, the Clearinghouse offers its services through toll-free phone (888-447-5556) or fax (409-845-0568).

Opened in Feb. 1998, the Clearinghouse is a cooperative venture between the Federal Highway Administration and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. It is operated by the Texas Transportation Institute and is supported by federal funds and contributions from private sector interests.

The Clearinghouse joins other national organizations such as the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, Federal Highway Administration, American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials and American Traffic Safety Services Association, to promote National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, April 3-7.
