Washington, D.C. [June 15, 2001] — An American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) project aimed at promoting safety in roadway construction zones has been selected a winner in the International Road Federation’s (IRF) 2001 Global Achievement Awards program. The annual competition honors organizations that demonstrate excellence and innovation in road development around the globe.
ARTBA was recognized for the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, the world’s largest "cyber-library" (http://wzsafety.tamu.edu/) of information on roadway construction safety issues. The facility, managed by ARTBA, is housed at the Texas Transportation Institute in College Station. Sparked by a promotional campaign by ARTBA and other safety organizations, usage of the Clearinghouse has grown dramatically since 1998. The facility currently handles 24,000 information requests annually from all 50 states and many countries around the world.
Thomas L. Chaffin, a division vice president with the 3M in St. Paul, Minn., and chairman of the ARTBA Transportation Safety Advisory Council, accepted the award on the association’s behalf during the IRF Road World Congress, held June 11-15 in Paris, France.
"For nearly 100 years, we have been committed to improving safety for roadway workers and motorists in the United States and around the world," 2001 ARTBA Chairman John Wight said. "ARTBA is very proud to receive this award and be recognized as an international safety leader for the transportation construction industry."
This marks the third award ARTBA has received for its efforts on the Clearinghouse facility. ARTBA was a 2000 recipient of the "Associations Advance America" award, sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). An ARTBA-initiated public relations campaign to promote roadway work zone safety through the Clearinghouse was also named as a 1999 ASAE "Gold Circle" award recipient for excellence in communication.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2002, ARTBA is the only national association that represents the collective interests of all sectors of the U.S. transportation construction industry before the White House, Congress, federal agencies, media and public.
