ATSSA Offers Work Zone Safety Grant Web Resource Center ATSSA has developed an online resource center for current Work Zone Safety Grant (WZSG) information With the demands of a very busy fall schedule, Donna Clark, the ATSSA WZSG project manager, is working to keep current information available.Currently, five tentative schedules are available in the resource center including classes for What Every Supervisor Should Know About Temporary Traffic Control Training (WESK), Traffic Control Technician, Traffic Control Supervisor, Flagger Instructor Training, and Nighttime Temporary Traffic Control Although the initial efforts will be to Offer classes in the sixteen opportunity states, ATSSA is accepting any input you may have on dates and locations For up-to-date information on the Work Zone Safety Training

PavingOBJECTIVES
The objective of the Work Zone Safety Grant Program is to develop guidelines and provide training to improve highway work zone safety.

STATEMENT OF WORK
ATSSA shall perform tasks within the following work areas: Highway Work Zone Worker Safety Training; Highway Work Zone Safety Guidelines Development; and Highway Work Zone Safety Guidelines Training.

 


Area 1 AREA 1: Highway Work Zone Worker Safety Training

Course descriptions and tentative training schedules for the following courses can be found at www.atssa.com: what everyone should know about ttc training(WESK) Traffic control technician(TCT) Traffic control supervisor(TCS) Flager Instruction training(FIT) Nighttime Traffic Control(NTC) Registration Information will be available soonThe What Everyone Should Know (WESK) About Temporary Traffic Control Training program will be completed this week. The program is designed to make participants aware of:

  • The importance of Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) training
  • Available training opportunities
  • How training can improve safety and protect you from litigation
  • How to improve safety

This Program Will Answer These Questions:

  • Why is training needed?
  • Who needs training?
  • What type of training is needed?
  • What training resources are there?
  • Where do you go for comprehensive TTC training?

The TCT course has been modified to meet NHI course development guidelines. It has a modular format. Each module has its own objectives and a recap. Teaching techniques like the “parking lot” have been incorporated. All workshops have been updated. The Instructor’s Guide is under development.

Teaching techniques like the “parking lot” have been incorporated.All workshops have been updated. The Student Reference Guide has been updated accordingly. The Instructor's Guide is under development. 


Area 2AREA 2: Highway Work Zone Safety Guidelines Development

Work zone safety grant partners ATSSA will work with various partners over the next four years to help administer and promote the products and services associated with the grant. The partners are Science Applications International Corp. J.M. Morales and Associates National Sheriff’s Association Consultants:Ernie Huckaby James E. Bryden, P.E. Visit www.atssa.com for the most current information. The ATSSA team held the Area 2 Practitioner Workshop on January 31 in San Antonio, Texas.

The goals of the workshop were to:

  • Introduce the Grant's purpose and activites
  • Obtain state, local, and industry practitioner input on:
    • Additional sources of policies, regulations, and guidelines 
    • The FHWA-selected topics
    • Additional topic areas 
    • Target audiences 
    • How to make the Guidelines effective for the identified target audiences

The workshop was very successful, and there was lots of active discussion amongst the 23 participants. Following the workshop, the ATSSA team met with FHWA to review the results of the workshop and to finalize the five topic areas for guideline development under Area 2 The final topic areas approved by FHWA are: 

  • Pedestrians and Work Zones
  • Positive Protection 
  • Maintenance work Zone Safety 
  • Selecting/Decommissioning High visibility Garments, and 
  • Work Zone Planning / Impact Assessment / Mitigation

The ATSSA team is currently working to finalize the Gap and Needs Analysis Report and to revise the Synthesis Report of Existing Policies, Regulations, and Guidelines, based on these final topic areas. we will then start work on developing guidelines for those areas.
