The Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania (CAWP) is observing its tenth annual National Workzone Awareness Week April 6-13, 2009.  Workzone Awareness Week was started by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2000, and is supported by a large network of government and industry partners.  The focus of the billboard campaign is to highlight the dangers to workers and motorists when driving through construction workzones.
 
To help raise the public’s awareness of the dangers of driving though workzones, CAWP put together a billboard campaign comprised of children’s artwork stressing the importance of workzone safety.  These drawings, from children ages 5-12, were the winning entries selected for CAWP’s second annual Kids Construction Safety Calendar Contest.  The contest was open to children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews of CAWP Contractor members, and entries were to depict the child’s parent or relative working safely on a heavy and highway construction project.

Each of the twelve winning entries from the contest will be featured on a billboard for Workzone Awareness Week.  The four first place entries will be displayed on a traditional billboard for the entire month of April, with locations including Route 422 (Ebensburg), Route 119 (Normalville), Wayne Avenue (Indiana), and I-70 (Smithton).  The remaining eight will be placed on digital boards from April 6-12 on the Parkway West, Parkway East, and I-279 North.
