ARTBA-Owned Work Zone Safety Clearinghouse Wins Prestigious International Award

(Washington, D.C.)—The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, owned by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF), has recently received a 2008 “Global Road Achievement Award” (GRAA) from the International Road Federation (IRF). The annual competition recognizes outstanding achievements, with an emphasis on research, innovation, design, advocacy, environmental responsibility, safety, program and quality management.
The Clearinghouse was the top honoree in the advocacy category. The facility is the world’s most comprehensive information resource on roadway construction zone safety issues such as technologies and equipment, accident and crash data, key safety engineer contacts, laws and regulations, worker safety training materials, research and publications, public education campaigns, Spanish language materials and educational materials for new drivers. The Texas Transportation Institute manages the Clearinghouse website (www.workzonesafety.org), and its operations are also supported by the Federal Highway Administration. Since 1998, the Clearinghouse has provided assistance to more than 500,000 users from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and nearly 30 countries around the world.
In less than two months, the Clearinghouse will host the National Traffic Management & Work Zone Safety Conference, collocated with the industry-leading “World of Asphalt” show in Orlando, Fla., March 10-12, 2009. Established in 2000, the IRF GRAA promotes the positive impact the road development industry makes worldwide. IRF is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization that works as a unique global platform bringing together public and private entities committed to road development. The ARTBA-TDF was established in 1985 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity to “promote research, education and public awareness.” It supports an array of initiatives, including educational scholarships, awards, executive education seminars, roadway work zone safety and training programs, special economic reports and a national exhibition on transportation.
