ARTBA Foundation Announces 2010 “Work Zone Safety Awareness Award” Winners

(Washington, D.C.)—Public and private transportation organizations from across the country were recognized for their commitment to safety June 8 at the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation’s (ARTBA-TDF) 12th annual “Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards” event during the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse “Power Workshop” during the 2010 International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The competition recognizes outstanding efforts to create public awareness and provide employee training to help reduce roadway work zone accidents, injuries and fatalities. The awards are divided into these categories: outreach campaigns, safety training and innovations in technology.
Seven companies and public agencies were honored:
National Outreach Programs:
Recognizes efforts of organizations, such as construction companies, utility companies, or trade associations that promote roadway work zone safety through implementation of employee and/or public education campaigns and training programs.
CH2M HILL
“Work Zone Safety Matters” Campaign
CH2M HILL launched “Work Zone Safety Matters,” an advertising outreach campaign in conjunction with National Work Zone Awareness Week to reduce job site accidents, injuries and fatalities. The campaign included the creation and distribution of a resource toolkit for employees nationwide and also hosted the American Traffic Safety Services National Work Zone Memorial with the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Statewide / Regional Outreach Programs:
Recognizes efforts of organizations, such as construction companies, utility companies, transportation agencies or trade associations that promote roadway work zone safety through implementation of employee and/or public education campaigns and training programs.
Statewide: Idaho Department of Transportation, Connecting Idaho Partners, J.V., The Langdon Group, Inc.
“GARVEE Transportation Program-Boise Airport Kiosk”
In an effort to notify travelers at the Boise Airport of ongoing construction activity, project partners created a work zone information kiosk near the baggage claim area. This multi-media resource included computer-animated simulations of the nearby Interstate 84 construction projects, graphically illustrated design elements, and demonstrated how motorists should drive through work zones. The team also produced informational brochures and video messages to update the public on construction progress.
Regional: Transurban-Fluor, AAA Mid-Atlantic
“Orange Cones. No Phones.” Campaign
Transurban-Fluor partnered with AAA Mid-Atlantic to develop and implement a comprehensive communications program to inform drivers of the dangers of distracted driving in the 14-mile long Interstate 495/Capital Beltway High Occupancy Toll lane construction area. The team conducted a media relations campaign, presented information at high school assemblies, and published advertising materials featuring the “Orange Cones. No Phones” slogan.
Safety Management:
Recognizes local programs that promote worker safety on the job site.
Corman Construction, Inc.
“Corman Safety/Training Programs Overhaul”
Corman Construction, based in Maryland, overhauled the firm’s safety training and education program to ensure worker compliance with continually-evolving safety regulations. Employees developed an aggressive training schedule and implemented onsite monitoring and education programs.
National Training Program:
Recognizes national programs that promote worker safety on the job site.
The LANE Construction Corporation
“Safety Orientation Training”
Connecticut-headquartered Lane Construction Corporation produced a “Safety Orientation Training” program specifically for employees new to the highway industry. The educational video emphasizes hands-on training and provides employees with a better understanding of highway, road, parking lot, bridge and asphalt production safety.
Regional / Statewide Training Program:
Recognizes statewide programs that promote worker safety on the job site.
Statewide: Reeves Construction Corporation
“Safety Training Video”
Reeves Construction Corporation, based in Georgia, developed a highly-customized safety video for corporate training with a specific emphasis on safety in an asphalt production environment. The video educates workers on the need for each employee to actively engage in the safety compliance process.
Regional: The Virginia Paving Company, a Division of the LANE Construction Corporation
“Universal Spotter Program”
The Virginia Paving Company, a division of the LANE Construction Corporation, created the “universal spotter program” to increase safety awareness through technical training regarding the dangers of equipment back-ups—a leading cause of workplace accidents and injuries. It encompasses management delegation, safety and protective clothing and technical sign communications.
The ARTBA-TDF was established in 1985 as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity to promote research, education and public awareness. It supports an array of initiatives, including educational scholarships, awards, roadway work zone safety and training programs, special economic reports and a national exhibition on transportation.
