National Work Zone Awareness Week - Slow for the Cone Zone
Each April we gather together for National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) to remember victims and to raise awareness of safety precautions for workers and motorist in work zones. This year’s national event was held April 8 in Sacramento, California on the west steps of the Capital. Caltrans hosted the event that also included the 18th Annual Caltrans Workers Memorial ceremony.
The event was attended by hundreds of Caltrans employees, roadway workers from private companies and a large number of families of workers killed or injured in work zones.
Featured guests included Caltrans Director Will Kempton, Business Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Dale Bonner, Assembly Transportation Committee Member Pedro Nava, Chair of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee Alan Lowentha and FHWA’s Safety Associate Administrator Jeff Lindley.
Near the conclusion of the event, the Caltrans Honor Guard performed a silent ceremony. The ceremony was concluded with a solo of “Amazing Grace,” and the release of a large flock of white doves in memory of all fallen work zone workers.
The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is represented on the Executive Planning Committee via the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). The Clearinghouse contributed nearly $12,000 to the event as a primary sponsor. The Clearinghouse also shipped thousands of posters, brochures and other support materials at no cost to be used for awareness campaigns across the United States. At home in Washington D.C., the Clearinghouse displayed orange candles in its windows and hung a work zone awareness ribbon flag.
A special section of the Clearinghouse website is dedicated to showcasing work zone awareness campaigns from state DOT's and other organizations. If you have an event or photos to share please email Lisa McCluskey, lmccluskey@artba.org.
The 2009 National Work Zone Awareness Week will occur April 6-11 and the kick-off event will be April 7 in Maryland.
