State/Agency: Delaware
Campaign Name: Survivors Plead: Move Over, Slow Down
Description: Church bells across Delaware tolled 32 times at 11 a.m. on April 8, 2009 for state transportation employees that have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1933 in honor of Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. Governor Jack Markell and Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) Secretary Carolann Wicks were speakers, joined by the wife and sons of Phillip Nelson, Jr., a DelDOT employee killed within a work zone in 2006; and DelDOT employee, Matthew Gardner, who suffered 13 broken bones, punctured lung and facial injuries in the same incident. Phil Nelson III, 19, and Matt Nelson, 17, the sons of Phil Nelson tolled a bell 32 times at the event. The PR and ad campaign featured the Nelson family telling their story of loss in their own words through print and audio ads, and also featured Matthew, who remains a DelDOT employee but will never be the same physically.
