State Agency: Louisiana
Campaign Name: “Geaux Orange: Drive Safe on the Huey”
Description:
Each April, National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week (NWZSAW) is held to bring national attention to motorist and worker safety and mobility issues in work zones. Geaux Orange is how the Huey P. Long Widening Project celebrated NWZSAW 2008. The “Geaux Orange Safety Team” passed out visor cards and key chains in retail areas located near the Huey P. Long Bridge throughout the week, giving the public a chance to ask questions and address concerns about the project. The team provided Huey P. Long travelers with information on where they could find the most up-to-date lane closure information and what to do if they encounter vehicle trouble on the bridge. Geaux Orange efforts received a lot of local support and media coverage. Several local TV news station anchors wore Geaux Orange neckties and ribbons and mentioned the campaign on air. WVUE Fox Morning News broadcast four live segments on location with spokesperson interviews and featured Geaux Orange on the WVUE Web site home page. In addition, local radio stations aired Geaux Orange messages during peak traffic times, encouraging drivers to slow down, be patient and drive cautiously in work zones.
Video PSAS: Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard and Tulane Head Baseball Coach Rick Jones filmed public service announcements in support of the work zone safety awareness campaign. The PSAs were posted on the web site below and on YouTube – a popular video sharing Web site, and local TV stations aired the PSAs throughout the month.
Materials: Safe driving tips and an official Geaux Orange visor card are available on the web site below.
