Title: Criteria for Restoration of Longitudinal Barriers
Author/Presenter: Gabler, Hampton; Gabauer, Douglas; Hampton, Carolyn
Publication Number: NCHRP Report 656
Abstract: Longitudinal barriers, such as guardrails, are installed along a roadway or in the roadway median to prevent an errant vehicle from traversing a steep slope, impacting a more dangerous roadside object, or entering opposing vehicle travel lanes. Very little is known, however, with respect to how these barriers perform after they have been damaged. The purpose of this report is to gather data on barrier effectiveness after having minor or severe damage, and to propose methods of barrier restoration.
