Title: Advanced Portable Traffic Management System Work Zone Operational Test

Abstract: This paper describes a project which is currently examining the functionality of an Advanced Portable Traffic Management system in a construction work zone environment. The basis of the system is the compilation of real-time traffic data from the work zone and the surrounding roadway system, and the transmission of that data through the work zone and to a traffic control center. The project is currently undergoing an operational test on Interstate 91 in between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. The paper focuses on the system definition and project organization.
