Abstract: This paper provides a review of the safety-related research of the advanced technology being conducted in the United States and how it is being applied to improve highway safety. Areas of discussion include: roadside safety developments, changeable message signs, variable speed limit system, automatic truck warning systems, condition-responsive work zone traffic control, environmental sensors for condition warning systems, prototype adverse visibility warning systems, and in-vehicle safety advisory and warning systems.
