Title: Developing Traffic Control Plans
Abstract: Traffic Control Plans (TCP) are essential for the safe movement of traffic and for the conduct of necessary operations within a work zone. TCPs should be developed by competent and trained personnel. Although existing TCPs are available for reference, the complexity of the circumstances and conditions of a specific roadway operation will dictate the design of the specific TCP. The article discusses the 4 components of temporary traffic control zones (advance warning areas; transition areas; activiity areas; and termination areas). Detours and diversions, one-lane 2-way traffic control, and pedestrian and worker safety are also covered.
