Title: Midwest Smart Work Zone Deployment Initiative (MwSWZDI) Technology Evaluations - Year One

Abstract: In 1997, the states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska discovered that each state had been independently conducting research to improve the safety and efficiency of traffic operations in work zones. In some cases, their research was very similar and tended to duplicate one another. Therefore, in 1998, the four states began to work together to avoid unnecessary duplication of research and facilitate the exchange and implementation of research results. This report presents the procedures, findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the technology evaluations completed by the states during the first year of the MwSWZDI. The technologies evaluated include solar powered barricade warning lights, wizard CB alert system, speed monitor display, removable orange rumble strips, safety warning system, solar powered illuminated raised pavement markers, lightguard system, removable orange rumble strips, vertical safetycade barricade, drone radar, speed guard radar speed reporting system, corel draw add-in for traffic control diagrams, advance lane drop arrows, portable traffic management system, ADAPTIR, speedguard system, and traffic control plan design software.
