Title: Work Zone Speed Limits Enforced With Cameras

Abstract: A recently circulated e-mail warns Illinois drivers they will receive a $375 ticket in the mail if photo radar catches them speeding even 1 mile per hour over the limit in a work zone, starting July 1. Although the e-mail may be misleading because it fails to mention that legislation was signed into law in 2004, other information in the e-mail about the amount of fines is accurate. Drivers will receive a $375 ticket in the mail for the first offense of speeding in a work zone that a speed camera catches. For the second offense, drivers must pay a $1,000 ticket and their license will be suspended for 90 days. In addition to fines for first and second offenses, drivers who hit a worker could receive a $10,000 fine and 14 years in prison.
