State Agency: California
Practice Provision: Application of types of temporary/removable pavement marking material and special linestriping material; Type of special linestriping material used to offset the problem of low visibility during rain events and nighttime conditions
Description:
In California, the Standard Special Provision for Temporary Striping includes provisions for temporary traffic stripe (paint) and for tape. If the line is to be moved during the course of construction, the standard is to utilize temporary tape to minimize the visual distraction of ground-off pavement marking "ghost lines" in low-light conditions. The current materials specification includes 11 preapproved products).
California has used profiled thermoplastic, but currently it may only be approved for use on an experimental basis. Within the last couple of years, there has been experimental application of 3M wet reflective traffic tape, which the state is reviewing for durability/reliability.
