Practice Details

State Agency: Pennsylvania
Practice Provision: Application of types of temporary/removable pavement marking material and special linestriping material; Type of special linestriping material used to offset the problem of low visibility during rain events and nighttime conditions
Description:
PennDOT's primary temporary pavement marking material is waterborne paint.
Approximately 23 temporary removable tapes are approved for use in Pennsylvania. The tape of choice is 3M's 750/751 series tape. However, the temporary removable tape is used only for short sections (mostly crossover areas) because of cost.
For cold-weather application, the recommended marking is a 10 mil application of epoxy paint with 20 pounds of beads per gallon of material.
Reflective Pavement Markers (RPMs) seems to be the only proven, cost-effective and durable device that provides wet night reflectivity to motorists.
3M's wet reflective tape: series 820/821 reflects at night in the rain but is not cost-effective.
