Practice Details
State Agency: Connecticut
Practice Provision: Devices and early warning methods used to reduce hits on low-clearance structures
Description:
Connecticut DOT currently uses signing and flashing lights to warn oversize vehicles of low clearances and positions warnings far enough back to allow vehicles to exit highway prior to clearance restriction. The signing may consist of post-mounted signs or variable message signing.
They also use a system to map out oversize/overweight (OS/OW) vehicle routes through the state. The OS/OW unit has a listing of construction work zones and checks if any width or height restrictions exist. If so, the vehicle is re-routed.
Information of a product available through Mandli Communications that allows measurement of vehicles at highway speeds from a laser scanner and will collect data and transmit remotely to a warning system or end user is available at the web site below.
