State Agency: Michigan
Practice Provision: Warning lights on channelizing devices
Description:
On all Michigan DOT projects, Type C lights are required on all plastic drums in place overnight for delineation purposes. If the drum is marking a spot hazard location, e.g., raised manhole, a Type A light is required on the drum overnight.
Currently on all MDOT projects, three Type C lights are required on all 12' Type III barricades for roadway closures going overnight. However, because of NCHRP 350, the standard may be going to an 8' Type III barricade in the future and requiring only two Type C lights. This is in the works.
In regard to signing, MDOT allows two types of sign sheeting on projects -- Engineering Grade and Fluorescent Prismatic Diamond Grade. No lights are required if the project utilizes the Diamond Grade sheeting. If Engineering Grade sheeting is used, MDOT requires one Type A warning light on the diamond warning signs with the light being mounted on the side of the sign facing traffic.
