Description:
The FHWA Geometric and Roadside Design Acceptance Letter Number SS-9, dates March 16, 1989, found single, 6.0-kg/m (4-pound/foot) EZE-Erect posts acceptable in both strong and weak soils. Some States have found two EZE-Erect posts acceptable by virtue of an extrapolation of the results of the single-post tests. Mr. Ray's calculations show that the dual post support would meet the change-in-velocity criteria. The report of the triple-post test shows an excessive velocity change. However, this was predictable from the single-post testing. In fact, the energy dissipated per post in the triple-post test was very close to that in the comparable single-post test. This gives us confidence in the interpolation and extrapolation of the test data. Thus, from these data we can infer that a dual-post support will perform satisfactorily in the strong-soil conditions under which the three-post support was tested.

Product Name: Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Small Sign Support
Description:
The sign post system consists of a 3-inch outside diameter FRP post composed of polyester resin (Owens-Corning Fiberglass) OCF E-440 Type Orthophthalic) and glass fiber reinforcement (OCF Roving 113, Yield T-30 or equivalent). The fiber-reinforced tube is manufactured by a process called "pultrusion", whereby longitudinal and diagonal glass fibers are combined with a resin. A surface veil of woven glass fiber completes the 1/8-inch thick wall of the tube. This FRP post is inserted into a 28-inch long, 3.10-inch to 3.125-inch inside diameter ceramic coated steel tube (wall thickness of 0.062 to 0.095 inches) which has been flattened for 12 inches to prevent rotation. Self-tapping screws secure the post in place.

The sign systems as tested can be described as a stop sign and street name sign mounted on an aluminum pole with a decorative casting at the base. The tested support poles ranged from 14.3 ft to 15.8 ft in length. The poles were embedded in NCHRP Report 350 Standard (strong) soil. The 32-inch octagonal shaped, cast aluminum stop sign blank was mounted 7 ft from the bottom of the sign to grade in all cases. Two street name sign frames with blank fillers were mounted at 90 degrees to each other near the top of the pole.
