Description:
The system typically consists of 4 or 5 trailer mounted units that can be deployed on the road shoulder approaching the work zone area. Traffic sensors detect the volumes and speeds at each monitoring site and relay a signal to an upstream unit when congestion is detected. Flashing beacons on the upstream sign are activated when the signal is received to create a no passing zone.
Tests: Evaluations have shown a reduction in forced merges, smoother traffic flow, and potential improvement in travel time.
