This three-day seminar is designed to acquaint the participants with the options available to improve traffic safety and save lives. The 2-3 course will examine the causes behind highway accidents and actions that can be taken to improve safety. Topics covered include the following: an overview of Traffic Safety; Safety Management Systems; Considering Safety: The Responsibilities of the Public Agency; The Driver-Roadway-Vehicle Triangle; Safety Audit Requirements; Public Education and Campaigns; Alcohol Countermeasures Increasing Seat Belt Use; Speeding Countermeasures; Interagency Coordination and the 4 "E"s: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency Management; Intelligent Transportation Systems and their Impact on Safety; The Impact of Traffic Control Devices; Signs; Signals; Markings; Geometric Design Impacts on Safety; Traffic Calming Techniques; Neo-Traditional Neighborhood Design; Urban Intersection Improvements; Controlled-Access Facilities; One Way Streets and Reversible Lanes; Roadside Safety: barriers, impact attenuators, bridge safety, and lighting; Work Zone Traffic Control; Pedestrian Safety; The Elderly; School Zone Safety; Enforcement Issues; Risk Management; and Workshop/Tour.
Audience: Local officials, primary decision-makers, engineers, enforcement professionals, and those involved in planning, design and operation of highway facilities. An engineering background is not required.
