Long Description: Stationary Lane Closure Installation and Removal

Diagram of a roadway illustrating the locations of equipment and identifying the components of the work zone area.

On a two lane segment of roadway with both lanes flowing in a northerly direction, the first segment of the diagram is marked as the advance warning area. This segment includes an arrow panel and precedes the transition area.

The next segment, the transition area, is characterized by a series of traffic cones that begin at the farthest right point of the right lane, at the white line marking the edge of the pavement, and proceed upward in a diagonal line across the right lane, until they reach the broken white line that separates the lanes of traffic. At this point, the cones are positioned along the center of the roadway and in a northerly direction.

The next segment of the diagram is the activity area. this area is divided into two segments, the first of which is the buffer space and the second of which is the work space. On the roadway, the traffic cones continue up the broken white lines between the lanes. Although the buffer space is empty, a symbol on the roadway that runs the length of the area marked work space is the actual work zone.

At the end of the activity area (work space), the termination area begins. This area is characterized by a progression of traffic cones from the center line diagonally upward and to the right until they meet the white line at the right edge of the roadway, reopening the right lane to through traffic.
