A Managed Work Zone on Colorado’s I-25 Exemplifies Technology’s Life-Saving Value to Workers and Travelers Alike

Author/Presenter: Markell, Brady
Abstract:

In September 2018, the Colorado DOT began construction on the I-25 South Gap project. Teaming up with Street Smart, which manages the Smart Work Zone equipment and integration, various Smart Work Zone systems are in use and work concurrently to reduce speeds and crashes while increasing safety on the $350 million project. Such systems include Truck Entering / Exiting Highway System, Queue Warning System, Travel Time Systems, Advisory Messages, Traffic Camera Trailers, Data Collection, Portable Variable Speed Limit, and Smart Portable Variable Speed Limit Trainers. Along with the Smart Work Zone systems, the collaboration between all stakeholders has led to some innovative solutions and increased safety, allowing rapid construction to take place while motorists stay informed of what is ahead of them.
