The overall objective of this project was to evaluate the use of enhanced traffic control on construction projects on Interstate 75. The enhancements included advance information, highway advisory radio, special signs, more visible traffic control, and enforcement. In the Phase I part of the study, the enhanced traffic control used on the Houston County project experienced a 7% reduction in accidents. However, for work zones in Dooly and Dooly/Houston Counties where enhanced traffic control was used there was a 74% increase in accidents compared to 82% increase where no enhanced traffic control was used. The worksite traffic control supervisors believed that the enhanced traffic control provided increased levels of safety within the construction work zone. They also believed that enforcement was a critical element that should be included as one of the elements in enhanced traffic control.
