What’s New Today is Mainstream Tomorrow

Author/Presenter: Harman, Thomas
Abstract:

After completing a successful third round in 2016, the Federal Highway Administration’s Every Day Counts (EDC) program has proven to be successful in providing tools and resources to help transportation stakeholders harness innovation to meet today’s challenges. Many innovations promoted in EDC-3 are now in mainstream use across the country. Road diets, for example, have become standard practice in 21 states. Other innovations that have been deployed widely and are becoming commonplace include data-driven safety analysis, Smarter Work Zones, geosynthetic reinforced soil—integrated bridge system (GRS—IBS) technology, three-dimensional (3D) engineered models for construction project management, and management of construction documents using e-Construction. One after another, state and local agencies have challenged conventional practices and embraced innovations, often adopting them as new norms.
