TxDOT Announces National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week

Texas Department of Transportation officials introduced National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week at a news conference at Interstate 40 and Washington Street. Since the state agency began keeping records in 1938 it has averaged four employee fatalities a year. Since September 1997, 485 department employees have been hurt in highway work zones. Highway department statistics show that 95 percent of the people killed or injured in highway work zones are motorists.
