Senator Calls for Work Zone Safety Bill
Abstract:The death of a South Carolina Department of Transportation worker, Paul Lewis Fee, has a state senator renewing his calls for more awareness about the importance safety around construction zones. Berkeley County Senator Larry Grooms has worked for the last few years to pass legislation to increase penalties for those who speed in work zones. The bill is called “Peanut’s Law” named for 22-year-old Kenneth “Peanut” Long, Jr. who was killed in 2013 while working as a flagger on a construction project in Williamsburg County. The bill would increase fines and add points to driver’s license for endangering a highway worker. Peanut’s Law is currently moving through the Senate committee process.
